RECORDS BROKEN

Hurdles and Steeplechase

A New Zealand record of 3.36 4-5 for two miles over hurdles was created by Clarion Call in winning the Remuera Hurdles at odds-on, says the Auckland “Herald.” The time was a second better than the record established by Red Fuchsia at Riccarton in 1929. Vai ‘Watch and Clarion Call did not begin as smartly as a couple of the others, but they jumped to the front at the first fence, after which Clarion Call was steadied in behind Vai Watch. The pace was solid, w’ith Vai Watch ano Clarion Call jumping in the most spectacular fashion, and they were together at the stands. Clarion Call always held an advantage over the last mile, and even though he ran down the last fence he won well at the end from The Smuggler, who was always handy, and made a fine showing. Vai Watch weakened near the end, but should be Improved by the race. The others were well beaten, Prince of Orange being a poor fourth and pulling up lame. Great Northern Contest. The Great Northern Steeplechase provided a thrilling finish between Billy Boy and Forest Glow, and victory went to the former by half a length. They raced together practically for the whole of the last five furlongs to come over the last two fences abreast and settle down to a hard finish. Billy Boy proven slightly the better stayer and emerged triumphant at his fourth attempt to win the race. The first and second horses were perfectly ridden by W. Rennie and C. Thomson respectively, and the 11-year-old Billy Boy received a great ovation. Forest Glow ran his sixth successive second and his consistency was deserving of a better fate. Diamond made a creditable showing for third, being one of the leaders for most of the journey, only to tire near the end. Royal Litnond was just behind Billy Boy and Forest Glow when he fell at the third to last fence, and would phobably have been difficult to beat with a stand-up. Golden England fell too early for any idea to be formed as to how he would have fared. ITmtali was handy commencing the last round, but failed Io stay. The Hiker tired badly in the concluding stages, ami Absent was pulled up when in a hopeless position in the lust round. Hilly Boy’s time, 7.47, was a record for the event.
