STILL INTERESTED

Lord Bledisloe and Dominion

LETTER TO CIDER COMPANY

Tho interest that Lord Bledisloe, late Governor-General of New Zealand, still takes in this country and its people, has been illustrated by many instances a recent one ol which applies to this district.

As is generally known, Lord Bledisloe is an orchardist and cider-manulac-turer on a large scale, and when lie was in New Zea'and he showed a very kindly interest in the Hawke’s Bay Cider Company's factory at Clive.

By the last English mail the manag-ing-director of the company. Mr. J. Raymond, received from Lord Hledisloo a letter making inquiries concerning the development of the inudstiy. ho said he was particularly interested in the growth of the scions of the cider-apple tries imported by the companj’ a few years ago, anil had had news of them from the pumologist at the Bristol Universttv.

The scions imported were taken Iroin trees early in the spring in England, and each stick was dipped in paraffin wax. Thev wert held in cool store till October, and were thus dormant lor eight months. They were then grafted on to two-year-old stock and also on to a hundred nine-year-old trees that were transplanted during that winter, resulting in all in a 97 per cent. take. The grafting was done by the staff of Messrs Webbs’ Nurseries, Hastings.
