East Coast Rumour

MAORIS AND LABOUR

Reported Necessity to Join Party

TO SECURE BENEFITS

By Telegraph—Press Association.

GISBORNE, June 3

Allegations that Maoris on the East Coast had been approached by political proselytisers on behalf of the Labour Party were made at a hui at Tikitiki. It was asserted that Maoris from the south had passed from settlement to settlement stating that it was necessary for natives to join the Labour Party If they wished to enjoy the benefits of the Labour Administration and that those who were not members of the partv would be passed over in the distribution of the advantages which would become available.

Sir Apirana Ngata, when the allegations were referred to him, declare'! it impossible that such statements weic being made with the authority of the Government, and said it was certain that when the matter was brought to the notice of the Prime Minister he would take steps to stop what had been going on.

It was possible, added Sir Apirana, that the zeal of these political mis sionaries might have an ulterior motive. It was recognised, of course, that Maori workers would be well ad vised to join the unions, but it was quite another thing to suggest that they could not obtain benefits without joining the Labour Party. A large gathering of Maori elders warmly supported the views expressed by Sir Apirana. >
