BRIGHT RUGBY

Auckland Beats Waikato in Annual Match

A POLISHED TEAM By Telegraph.—Press Association. HAMILTON, June 3. Displaying twice the polish and nippiness of Waikato, the Auckland Rugby representatives impressively defeated Waikato when the annual match was played to-day. The weather was ideal and the ground in perfect order. The attendance exceeded 5000, which is a record crowd for an off day. Playing with a strong wind behind them, Auckland early established a handy lead, the forwards, handling like backs, being too fast for the local team. The score at half-time was 13—3 in the visitors’ favour. This spell was keenly fought, with little spectacular play. In the second half the Auckland team threw the ball about in great style and highly spectacular Rugby was witnessed. The pick of all the forwards was J. Leeson (Waikato), who played a very dashing game and emphasised his hard luck in not touring with the All Blacks last year. Hadley •nd McLean (Auckland) were not particularly outstanding, the former just bolding his ow n in hooking. Auckland’s backs were very impressive perhaps the most outstanding being fletcher, the speedy, straight-njnning centre. D. Solomon was sound at second five-eighths, but was well watched by his younger brother, G. Solomon, who played in this position for Waiato. Pardington and F. N. Cassidy were always prominent in the Waikato pack and the pick of the local backs was A. Lissette. L. Russell, at half, made few mistakes and was always in the thick of play. The final score was Auckland 28, Waikato 13.
