Miscellaneous Items from Council Meeting

Business dealt with by the Napier Borough Council at its meeting last night included the following mutters:— i

Tho sum of £250 is to be placed upon the Napier Borough Council estimates for possible requirements of the Napier Airport Committee

The sum of £5OO is to be paid by the Napier Borough Council to the Public Works Department as the council’s share of the amount required for improvements to Napier’s aerodrome.

The Napier Borough Council’s share of the Napier Fire Board’s levy for the year ending March 31, 1937, is £2156 10/-. A leter from the Fire Board advising of this was "received” by- the council last evening.

A donation of £o 5/- is to be made to the Cape Kidnappers Sanctuary Board by the Napier Borough Council. The money is to be used for the completion of the steps, fence and plantation and to erect a shelter-shed and water tank.

A contribution of £llO towards the estimated amount of £3lO to be spent by the Napier Harbour Board on Breakwater road is to be made by the Napier Borough Council. The work consists of regrading and metalling the northern portion ot the road.

The Napier borough traffic authorities had another busy day yesterday renewing drivers’ licences and issuing new ones. When the office closed yesterday afternoon, 1150 licences hud teen renewed out of a total of 2620. Up until the corresponding time last year 1365 licences had been renewed.

Nearly 55,000,000 gallons of watei were pumped through the Napier borough pumping station during tho past month, representing an increase ot 319,000 gallons on the quantity for the corresponding period of last year. Altogether, the pumps worked tor 694 J hours. The maximuin demand was 2,021,000 gallons, on May 18.

The principle ot a Local-Body Employees’ Union was approved by the Napier Borough Council last evening, when a decision was reached to ask the Municipal Association to further the proposal. This matter was considered in consequence of a letter received from Napier Borough Council employees, who agreed at a recent meeting to ask the council to take the initial steps in promoting a scheme for the formation of a Local-Body Employees’ Union right throughout New Zealand.

The innovation of training garden cadets, a system which has proved most popular in the larger centres of New Zealand, was adopted by the Napier Borough Council last July, and boys employed have given every satisfaction. The superintendent of Napier borough reserves, Mr Q. W. Corner, states in his May report: “1 feel sure that in the future the council will feel quite justified in having embarked upon this scheme With the facilities which I now have in ths way of an office —a portion of which is used as a dining and study room for the cadets, and for evening lectures— I am able to give more personal attention to their training.”
