REMODELLING WORK
Napier Botanical Gardens Six hundred trees and shrubs have been used in a garden remodelling scheme which has been carried out at the .Napier Botanical Gardens by the siiperintehdent ot borough reserves, Mr C W Corner. The cost of upkeep ot the gardens has been increased as a result of the violent storm last February, when considerable damage was done to trees and shrubs. in his May report to the Borough Council, Mr Corner makes the following reterence to the Botanical Gardens :— • “The remodelling of these gardens by dismantling old bird-cages, doing away with useless paths, curtailing the bedding-out schemes. remodelling shrubberies and extending lawns has been carried out, and these newlytormed lawns have done remarkably well. Sir hundred trees and shrubs were used in the remodelling, and with the ideal conditions which prevailed for the growing of trees and shrubs and the establishing ot lawns this season the growth has more than exceeded my expectations. “The disastrous February storm brought down many fine specimen trees and caused considerable damage. Besides destroying valuable trees and other flora, this devastating storm in no small measure added to the cost oi upkeep of these gardens and other reserves. We have in stock large quantities of numerous varieties of trees and shrubs, especiall natives, which 1 hope to plant out to take the place ot those destroyed and for carrying out additional impr< vements."
