BRITISH HINTS Baldwin Confesses "Bitter Humiliation” THE ABYSSINIAN FAILURE British Official Wireless Service. RUGBY, May 5. The Prime Minister, Mr. Stanley Baldwin, and the Foreign Secretary, Mr. Anthony Eden, received a deputation from the League of Nations Union. Both Ministers spoke and emphasised that the Government would have to take stock of the League’s position in the light of the apparent failure of collective action In the ItaloEthlopian dispute. The question of reform of the Covenant needed very careful consideration. Press Association cables state that this statement has caused a sensation in political circles. The “Daily Mail” says it is interpreted as meaning the collapse of the League as at present constituted. Professor Gilbert Murray, a member of the deputation, speaking later at Oxford, revealed that Mr Baldwin confessed “bitter humiliation” at tho League's failure to save Abyssinia, Exceptional interest is therefore centred in to-morrow’s foreign affairs debate in the House of Commons, in which, it is suggested, Mr Edon may indicate the Government’s League-re-form proposals. The “Daily Herald” declares that the Ministers’ statement has gravely alarmed the Labour Party, whose executive meeting to-day will consider its attitude.
