Government Desires to Protect Them AUSTRALIAN INCURSION (B.v Telesraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May fl. The desire of the Government to conserve and protect fishing-grounds oft the New Zealand coast was expressed by the Minister of Alarine, the Hon. P. Fraser, in answering a deputation representing Thames, Whangarei and East Coast fishing interests which waited on him. The Alinister referred to the inter-colonial complications likely to arise from the decision of the Australian Trawling Co. to operate in tho vicinity of the Dominion, and mentioned that there was even a suggestion of Australian interests entering the oyster trade in Foveaux Strait. “We know the trials and difficulties of fishermen, and we are fully in sympathy with them,” said Jlr Fraser. “It is not in the interests ol anyone if the fishing-bods of the Dominion are to be destroyed. Tho interests of men who have devoted their lives to any avocation cannot be pushed lightly aside. Every effort will be made to overcome the present difficulties. The whole matter will be fully investigated, and fishermen can he assured of a fair deal.”
