GROOMED BEAUTY

Goldwyn Girls on Loan

CHARLES LAUGHTON’S NEXT

Samuel Goldwyn is to lend 12 of his beautiful Goldwyn Girls to Alexander Korda for a British film in which Laughton will star. Laughton will have the part of a West End hotel pro prietor, and the girls will form the nucleus of the show-girls in the hold cabaret.

“I have picked 12 of the best girls who appear in my Eddie Cantor film, ‘Strike Me Pink,”’ said Mr Goldwyn, on his arrival in London recently. “No, I shall not let them stay. They are among about 20 I have under contract, and I shall want them later in the year for my big colour film, ‘Goldwyn Follies,’ which will be Eddie Cantor’s starring picture for next year. “This should be my most pretentious effort and I am here to find a couple of London beauties for it. I have never before come to England and Europe for beauties, but this time I hope to secure a dozen girls for the picture from various European countries.

“I am working out a scheme whereby the English girls will be more or less a public choice. I am certain I can find the girls. America has not a monopoly of beauty, though I think we can put up a pretty good show.’’ Asked why his screen beauties seem ed to surpass all other show girls in good looks, Mr Goldwyn said: “Grooming has a great deal to do with it. Girls write to me from all over the world. Their numbers are weeded out and 1 see them in batches of five. From each batch I expect to find one girl.

“They are put under contract and are paid while they are going through an intensive course of grooming, training in deportment and so on. Expert hairdressers and make-up artists take them in hand and they are told what to eat and how to keep lit. “Finally, after some months, the beauty is ready for the screen. The trouble is that 1 cannot keep them for my pictures. They get offers from other producers, and it would be wrong to stand in the way of their getting on in their profession. “Virginia Bruce, Paulette Goddard, Toby Wing and Barbara Weekes are examples of girls who have started in my beauty choruses and have gone on to bigger things. “I rarely have a girl for more than two years. So all the time I must have beauty scouts about the country looking for girls to make up the loss.”

The ideal weight for a Goldwyn beauty is about 1151 b. and the average height is between sft 4in. and sft. Gin.
