A VALUABLE YOUNGSTER

Breaks His Neck

It was exceedingly bad luck for his owner, Mr. F. W. Einhorn, when the Gay Shield—Persis two-year-old, after going about quarter of a mile, in the Pacific Handicap on Saturday, fell against a railing and broke his neck. Gay Chief, a hard-worked youngster, had previously started 18 times for three wins and a dead-heat for first, a dead-heat for second, and seven thirds, and he finished better in his last race than in any of his earlier outings. The Gay Shield colt made his bow at the Auckland spring meeting last October, running twice, unplaced, to Stretto and Gallio respectively. He was a close third to Pelmet in the Wellesley Stakes, and in his next race, the Tamahere Stakes at Te Itapa, he finished fast into third place after a slow beginning. He was not in the money on the second day of the Waikato meeting. ■Followed a strenuous battle at Pukekohe, when he dead-heated with Surella, a head behind Marjory Paw. The Takapuna spring meeting at Ellerslie was the occasion of his first win. He ran fourth on the first day, when Maxown won, and on the second he beat the better-faneied Rulette. Three days later he won from Surview at the Dargaville meeting at Avondale. He began his Christmas racing with a third in the Great Northern Foal Stakes, and a third in the Royal Stakes. On his trip to the Trentharn meeting in January, he improved with each start, being unplaced in Maia’s race on the opening day, third to Gustos on the middle day, and a dead-heat for first with Deficit in the Hopeful Stakes on the last day. Two outings at Te Rapa last month resulted in one third, and at Te Aroha, he filled third place to Ned Cuttie on the opening day and turned the tables by winning on the second. Gay Chief was a full brother to Gav Seton, who also performed well in his first racing season.
