Mr. Ernest W. Hunt and Mr. W. S. La Trobe have been elected to vacancies on the Council of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Alts.

Mr. G. £. Fowler, secretary-manager of the Central Hawke’s Bay Electrio Power Board, has gone on * visit to several power boards in the north.

Sir Benjamin Fuller, Mr. W. Burton, general manager of Fuller-Hayward Theatres, and Mr. T. L. Oraigie were visitors to Hastings and Napier over the week-end.

Mr. J. E. Thomas, who has been district officer of the Department of Industries and Commerce for Otago and Southland since July last, has received notice of his transfer to Wellington.

Mr. Graham McCormick, of Hastings, has been advisee by his doctor to take a month’s holiday. He left for Australia last week and was due to land at Sydney to-day. II is friends will wish him complete and speedy recovery.

Mr. C. J. McKenzie, Under-Secre-tary of the Public Works Department, ✓ Wellington, who has been a patient in ' a private hospital in Greymouth for some time, is showing considerable improvement, although he is still confined to his bed.

The Hon. B. C. Robbins M.L.C., and Mrs Robbins, who have been staying with their daughter and son-in-law Mr and Mrs S. F, Stevens, Takapau, have returned to their home at Tauranga. prior to taking up their residence at Wellington lor the Parliamentary session.

Mr A. V. Stamp, goods clerk at the Hastings railway station for the past eight years, has received advice of his transfer to Wellington, and he will leave to take over his pew duties on the relief staff this week. Mr Stamp is to be succeeded by Mr R. T. Harrison, of Westport.

Dr. Francis Bennett, of Christchurch, has received advice from the Hunterian Society in London that be hae been awarded this society’s gold medal for practitioners for 1935. Th* medal has been presented for Dr. Bennett’s essay on “The Conduct of Midwifery in General Practice.” Thirteen essays were submitted from all parts of the Empire in the competition, six from Great Britain, four from Australia and New Zealand, and one each from Canada, Africa and India. Dr. Bennett is the first practitioner outsid* Great Britain to be awarded the medal.

Mr. R. MeKeen, M.P. for Wellington South, who will represent the Gov. eminent at the conference of the International Labour Office at Geneva in June, will be accompanied by Mrs. MeKeen. They leave on April 28. After the Geneva conference, Mr. MeKeen will make a tour of England. Scotland and Ireland, largely for the purpose of investigating industrial con. ditions. The comprehensive information thus to bo obtained should be of value to tho Government upon his return. as Mr MeKeen is associated aa n co-opted member with the Minister of Labour the Hon H. T Armstrong. Mr. and Mrs. McKeon will probably be absent from New Zealand for about five months.
