SAVILE CUP POLO
Feilding Tournament on Monday STERLING CONTESTS The New Zealand Polo Association’s Savile Cup tournament, at which lour Hawke's Bay teams will be competing, will commence on Monday at I'eilding, when endeavours will be made to wrest the trophy from the present holders, Matangi, a team from the Waikato. There has been a revival of polo in the Dominion during the past tour years and it is expected that the forthcoming fixture wid provide many sterling contests. The four teams which will represent Hawke’s Bay are as follow ;— A team: J. Lyons, J. D. Ormond, It. Q. Mackenzie, C. I l '. Mackenzie. B team: E. W. Symes, H. A. Mackenzie, J. M. Chambers, E. T. Wilder. C team: G. F. Hardy, R. B, Nelson, D. H. Newbigin, b. Wright. I) team: T. Macfarlane, T. Robson, I. .Mackenzie. T. A. Gatenby. The present president of the New Zealand Polo Association is Mr W. G. Fry, ol I'eliding, and the secretary Mr ix. M. Little. The Savile Cup tournaments are played on central grounds, three years out of every four in the North Island, and the remaining year in the South Island in the following sequence: Feilding, Christchurch, Feilding, Waikato. There are at present 18 affiliated polo clubs in New Zealand: Christchurch, Cambridge, Glen Murray, Homeward. Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough, Matamata, Matangi, Mayfield. Paremanui, Poverty Bay, Rangitikei, le Awamutu. Taupiri. Waihou, Wairarapa, Waerenga and Waimai. The Savile Cup was presented in 1889 by Captain R. Stewart Savile, A.D.C. to the Governor of that time, to be played for annually by the polo clubs in New Zealand. On the formation of the New Zealand Polo Association on September 17, 1891, the management of the Savile Cup was vested in it. Since that date the cup has been played for continuously with the exception of the war years, 1915-1919, and the years of the depression, 1931-1934.
