SECOND SINGAPORE
South Africa Fortifying Table Bay BIG DOCK WORKS IN VIEW (Received 14, 9.15 a.m.) CAPETOWN, March 13. A decision has been made intensively to fortify Robben Island, which is part of a scheme to make Table Bay a second Singapore. The heavy guns at Lion’s Head cannot be fired, as a full charge would blow the closelyinhabited Seapoint to pieces. The Table Bay works are being developed to cost £10,000,000 to enable vessels of the heaviest tonnage to dock. It is believed that it is the intention of the Government to proceed with a big equipment scheme as a result of which Table Bay will supersede Simonstown as the naval port. Robben Island was formerly a leper settlement and since has been unoccupied except by lighthouse-ketyers.
