HASTINGS TRACK NOTES

Lavina’s Impressive Effort

(By “The Barb.”)

There was not the amount of fast work on the Hastings tracks on Tuesday that was expected with so many Hawke's Bay entrants claiming engagement at the Woodville meeting this week-end. Where not specified the following gallups were accomplished on the plough.

Blue Shirt (J. Forsyth) and Blue Garter (8. McNaughton) were the first to get going, running half a mile in uljsecs., the latter very comfortably. Blue Shirt (Garter Blue—Chemise) has not done a great deal of fast work up to now, but impresses as possessing the family galloping ability.

Speed was not galloped, being restricted to pace work on the sand. He is fit and well, but perhaps a little on the big side, so may do better next Saturday than on Friday. His stable companion Queen’s Pride was also worked slowly.

Hest (P. Atkins), alone, pleased by getting to the end of three-quarters of a mile in 1.15 J. This mare has been recording similar times for the last three months, but still has four defeats in a row when looking the best of good things. Naturally trackwatchers do not take much notice of her impressive times now.

Shu (P. Atkins) was given a working gallop only, Laconic (J. Leach) being his companion. The pair were together all the way over the once round in 1.44.

Tigrone (R. Marsh), who has only recently joined up with G. Greene’s stable, was sent half a mile with Royal Banquet (P. Atkins), taking o3|, so that the pace was not serious. Royal Banquet worked freely, this being very much in contrast with his movement this time last year, but then the season was totally different.

Silver Tide (J. Leach) simply played with her half-sister Silver Song (J. Forsyth) over five furlongs, registering a shade better than 65secs. The former should be very handy in maiden events over the holiday meetings.

* * * Trailer (J. Olsen) was going easily alongside a Mon Mint gelding (H. Murray) at the end of half a mile.

Royal Shift (P. Atkins) and Granvale (R. Marsh) were both fully extended in running six furlongs in I.lB}. Granvale now looks far more solid than hitherto and it would not surprise if he is returned winner of a middle dis. tance hack race in the near future.

11 Duce (S. McNaughton) and Happy Landing (J. Prendegast) surprised by getting to the end of halt a mile in JOJsees. There was little to choose between the pair. This gallop strongly suggests that when these two colts come right good races should be their showing.

Drumpeel (P. Atkins), a maiden candidate for Woodville, finished three lengths ahead of Blygain (R. Marsh) over five furlongs in 64Jsecs. As Blygain beat a smart field of hack sprinters in her last race, this makes Drumpeel appear a very fair maiden, but it must not be lost sight of that Blygain never troubles to give of her best in private, being satisfied to store it up until the day.

Mohua (P. Atkins) was sent on the course proper to run her half-mile alone in 491 secs., a fair efiiort for a two-year-old. She is in fine fettle for the Woodville trip, but has not yet overcome her barrier timidity.

The hurdler Journet (E. Deslandes) and Caen (A. Griffiths) were allowed to do only a working gallop, registering 1.23 for six furlongs.

On the course proper First Chaptei (J. Forsyth) held Chat’s measure over the last three of four furlongs, impressing as an improved horse. The half-mile was run in 49}secs.

The best gallop of the morning was accomplished by Lavina (J. Leach), who in company with Slippery (H. Young) got to the end of five furlongs in 62|secs. The pair got away together from a moving start and ran thus for two furlongs, when Lavina went away gradually to finish with a four lengths advantage. This was undoubtedly an effort above the ordinary for a hack.
