EGYPT SAFEGUARDS

BRITAIN’S UNDERTAKING

Will Not Infringe Rights

INDEPENDENCE AGITATION

(By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Received 17, 10.40 a.m.) CAIRO, Sept. 10.

Official confirmation is now given to the newspaper “Algehad’s” statement that, as a result of conversations with the Premier and acting-High Commissioner, Britain has given an undertaking that in the event of war Britain will not infringe any Egyptian rights and will not take any special measures in Egypt without the Egyptian Government’s agreement. An official message from Alexandria states that Britain has promised consultation with Egypt regarding any developments concerning her.

“The Times” Cairo correspondent says that the Egyptians are keenly speculating upon the country’s position m the event of an Abyssinian war. There is a disposition to assume that Egypt holds the key position. Despite general sympathy with Abyssinia, which is intensified by the Italian crowd’s overbearing manner when 11 Duce’s sons traversed the canal, the popular Press, especially the Wafdist, urges that Egypt should not lend support to sanctions unless in return lor a definite understanding with Britain for complete realisation of Egyptian independence. Newspapers susceptible to Italian propaganda suggest that the situation is similar to 1919. Egypt must answer “No” to Britain with violence in order to obtain her rights. ASSEMBLING OF SENUSSI Egyptian Government Denial (Received 17, 1.15 p.m.) ALEXANDRIA, Sept. 16. Referring to Signor Mussolini’s dispatch of troops to Libya, the Egyptian Government denies that Senussi are assembling on the Cyrenaica frontier or fomenting trouble there.
