BOROUGH AMENITIES
Some Minor Works
In making a statement this morning in reference to the carrying out of a number of major constructional projects in the borough, the Mayor mentioned the following minor decisions made by the council as the result of a recent tour of inspection. The two artesian wells situated near the Clock Tower will be directed into the street channels from Railway road to Karamu road and from Railway road to King street so as to keep the channels regularly flushed. It was decided by the council to make a grant of £l5 to the Haumoana Beach Improvement Society in aid of the funds to assist in the provision of amenities for visitors to the beach. All the lamp-standards of the cluster lights in the business area are to be repainted. A plan for the lay-out of the area surrounding the Clock Tower site is now being prepared, and the council has under consideration a scheme to spend some £2500 on the construction of underground lavatories. That work will be considered with the estimates for the next year.
It was resolved that the new library, when it is built, will be situated <>■ the Civic Square site, but its exact location will not be derided until the council confers again with Mr. R. B. Hammond, Dominion Town Planner. The fence of the cemetery is to I* painted, and the footpaths and drive extended and improved.
