HASTINGS SEWERAGE
Outlet Near Tukituki PROVIDING FOR THE FUTURE A scheme which provides for taking Hastings sewage by gravitation Into the sea at a point between the Tukituki and Ngaruroro rivers, and which Is estimated to cost about £48,500 to put into effect, is now favoured by the Hastings Borough Council, and is proposal as an alternative to the other proposal to construct an outfall into the Ngaruroro river at a cost of £23,000.
The difference between the two schemes so far as the financial aspect is considered, said the Mayor, Mr. G. A. Maddison, in making a statement on borough works this morning, is that the Ngaruroro scheme would involve considerable annual expenditure, whereas the other would need very little. Mr. W. Bromley, deputy chairman of the Unemployment Board, during his visit to Hastings recently, was asked whether the board would subsidise the work, and the Mayor states that the work will be proceeded with at an early date if a subsidy is available. Though the second scheme was the more costly, said Mr. Maddison, the council favoured the adoption of it so long as the two companies controlling the Whakatu and Tomoana work.gave their co-operation. The two works had received notice, he said, requiring them to eease the pollution of the river, and the residential area of Clive would be concerned in that matter. If the cooperation of the works could be obtained, and if the two companies made a satisfactory contribution towards the scheme, it would be possible to carry cut the work at a comparatively early date. The larger scheme, His Worship concluded, would in his and the connefTs view be much the more satisfactory, and would provide efficiently for the future closer settlement of Hastings, when areas such ns the Knranri Settle ment would eventually be brought within the borough boundary.
