Mr J. J. Hall, Hastings, representative of International Correspondence Schools, was elected a member of the Hastings Chamber of Commerce last evening.

Mr. T. 0. Bishop, secretary of the New Zealand Employers’ Federation, returned yesterday to Wellington after attending the International Labour Conference at Geneva.

Mr. C. M. Wheeler, 8.E., A.M.lnst. C.E., who has been engineering assistant for the Public Works Department at Palmerston North, has resigned to take up a position with a private firm at Wellington.

Mr I. W. Saunders, bacteriologist at the Napier Hospital, has resigned. The announcement was made at the board meeting yesterday, at which members expressed their regret. A letter of appreciation is to be sent to him, He is to undertake similar duties at New Plymouth.

Mr J. S. McLeod, president, and Mr W. E. Bate, vice-president, were appointed at last evening’s meeting of the Hastings Chamber of Commerce to represent the chamber at the annual conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce in Napier at the end of October.

The Hon. Adam Hamilton, who for 13 years has represented the Wallace electorate in the House of Representatives, was unanimously chosen as the Nationalist candidate for Wallace at a combined meeting of the United Party and Reform Party supporters at Riverton yesterday.—Press Assn.

Mr. G. W. Clinkard, who is to teavo Wellington shortly to take up the New Zealand Trade Commissionship for Europe, with headquarters at Brussels, went into a Wellington private hospital yesterday suffering from a temporary indisposition. Though Mr, Clinkard will be unable to fulfil any public or private engagements, it is not expected that his indisposition will prevent him from sailing on September 26.

Mr E. E. Hooper, who for the past 44 years has been connected with newspaper work in Hamilton and has been editor of the “Waikato Times” for the last 14 years, was the recipient of a handsome presentation from the directors on the occasion of his retirement from the editorship of the paper to-day. Tributes to Mr Hooper’s services in connection with the newspaper’s work in the town and district were paid by several speakers. His successor is Mr H. W. Nixon, of Christchurch.—Press Assn.
