ENGINEER’S REPORT

Dredging operations and other work carried out during the past month in connection with the development of the Breakwater harbour were reported upon to the Napier Harbour Board to-day by the engineer, Mr G. W. B. Lowson:— Dredger Whakarire. — The bucket dredger “Whakarire” was engaged throughout the period in dredging the western side of the No. 3 wharf site in successive stages to a low water depth of 35 feet. The dredger was also used for pulling out stumps of broken fender piles on the western side of the Glasgow, wharf. The bent rudder was unshipped, straightened and refitted. Altogether eight working days were lost through bad weather, repairs, pile drawing, etc., the output for the month being 25,000 tons, and the quantity of spoil removed and taken to sea since the dredger commenced work at Napier now being 375,225 tons.

Roads. —That portion of the waterfront road from the main cross road to about the Glasgow ramp was formed, rolled and surfaced, as was part of the outer portion of the same road west of the No. 4 wharf approach. Excavation.—The Hooper crane was brought round to the inshore end of the breakwater, and the work of blasting out for forming the road ramp to the Glasgow wharf is now in progress. Concrete removed from this locality is being stored along the waterfront. Wharf No. 3.—The contractor for the erection of warf No. 3 has completed the erection of a store and office, and is engaged in assembling his plant. Glasgow Wharf.—Sections of the eastern (timber side) of the Glasgow Wharf were opened up as shipping permitted, and defective timbers in the superstructure renewed. Four fender pile stumps on the western side of the wharf were pulled out by the “Whakarire” preparatory to driving new piles.

Breakwater Extention. —Alterations were effected to the travelling gear of the large No. 1 crane, two new travelling wheels fitted to the mixer gantry, and two of the block trucks overhauled. The contractor for the extension of the Breakwater made 133 more core blocks and 18 larger blocks. Costs.—The following amounts were expended upon the undermentioned works during the period under consideration:—Dredger Whakarire £1520 17/5, dredger J.D.O. £242 5/5, breakwater reclamation works £lll 19/11, Reading £179 5/10, Railway tracks £26 12/10, Railway maintenance £55 19/10, Bluff slip removal £520 19/6, Breakwater wharves £147 7/-, Inner harbour wharves £36 13/-.
