BASKETBALL TOURNEY

Napier Wins Ail Games WELLINGTON VISITORS During the week-end a team of basketball players from St. Joseph’s Catholic Club, Wellington, together with a team from the Convent Old Girls’ Club, Hastings, visited Napier to participate in a friendly tournament organised by the Napier Convent Old Girls’ Basketball Club. The games were all well contested, some excellent play being shown, the Napier girls winning every game, with the Hastings team second and Wellington third. During their stay, the visiting teams were entertained at a dance, and were afterwards the guests of the Napieg team at a dinner at the Hotel Central. This was presided over by the Rev. Father H. Seymour, president of the Napier C.O.G. Club, who welcomed the visitors and congratulated all the teams on the fine sporting spirit shown and expressed the hope that such a friendly tournament should become an annual one. The Rev. Father Fletcher, of Wellington, on behalf of the Wellington Club, thanked the Napier team for their invitation, and fine hospitality, and assured them that the time spent in the sunny city had been among the most enjoyable in the history of Bt. Joseph’s Club. He also announced that a silver cup had been donated by a Wellingtonian for competition between all Catholic basketball clubs in the Dominion. It was hoped to hold the first tournament for this trophy in Wellington this season, and he hoped that both the Napier and Hastings Clubs would be competing. Mr P. Hannah, on behalf of the Hastings Club, endorsed the remarks of the Rev. Father Fletcher. Three cheers were then given for the winners and losers alike. The referees for the games were Misses M. Hughes (Napier), F. Struthers (Hastings), and E. Cahill (Napier), Prior to their departure the visitors were taken for a drive by the Napier team. The Wellington Club presented the Napier girls with an enlarged photograph of the team which had played against Napier at Wellington recently, when Napier was also victorious.

H.B. Championship The Hawke’s Bay basketball championship was decided at Ebbett Park, Hastings, on Saturday. In the senior section West End, the Hastings winners, secured the championship by defeating Napier by 27 to 15. , In the intermediate section, Central Hawke’s Bay defeated Napier by 19 to i 18. Convent defeated Central Hawke’s . Bay, 28 —13, and Convent defeated Napier 23—12.
