SCHOOL SWIMMING

Napier Trophy Presented A very pleasant and interesting function took place at the Hastings Street School, Napier, at 9 o’clock yesterday morning when the pupils assembled to witness the presentation of the Me Ghee Memorial Swimming and LifeSaving Cup. This cup was competed for by school teams in Napier and was won by Josie Redshaw, Margaret Blewman, Alick Howse and Ronald Willis, of the Hastings Street School. Mr H. Le Bas was present at yesterday’s function and handed over the J cup to the winning team. Members of the Hastings Street School Committee were also present. In the course of an appropriate speech Mr Le Bas said that it gave him exceptional pleasure to present the cup to a team from Hastings Street School, because that school had produced some very fine swimmers. Hastings Street School was to be particularly congratulated because it had won the cup against other schools having older pupils in higher standards. He was always interested in any achievement of the school, because he had been one of its pupils. Mr Le Bas paid a tribute to the good work done by Mr J. C. Goodall, teacher in charge of the swimming at the school. Two books (donated by Mr Harold Kidson) for the most improved swimmers last summer were won by Juno Macken and Ronald McLean. These were presented to the pupils by Mr Le Bas at yesterday’s function as also were 40 learners' certificates (for 50 yards swim), eight proficiency certificates (220 yards} and one merit certi ficato (880 yards}. The headmaster (Mr J. A. Engbretsen) on behalf of the pupils expressed appreciation of the presence of Mr Le Bas and members of the committee and referred to the fact that Mr Le Bas had done a great deal to f urther school swimming in Napier. The function concluded with cheers for the cup winners and the visitors.
