Wellington Defeats Hastings

H.B. FEDERATION SET UP On Saturday night at the Hastings Drill Hail a badminton team from Wellington played a match against the Hastings club and were successful by 10 matches to four. A large number of spectators were present, and showed a keen interest in the games. The Hastings club, which has only been in existence for one year, put up a good exhibition against their more experienced opponente. The Wellington team included J. Vaughan, the runner-up for the Wellington provincial championships, and his play in the singles against Watson was very clever. The spectators were appreciative of his skill. Wilson and Watson combined well in the men’s doubles to defeat Vaughan and Evans Scott in the men’s doubles in the third set. Wilson also won his singles against Evans Scott, and the score in the final set was a good indication ot the closeness of the game. The Wellington ladies were too experienced for the local team and the champion pair, Misses Morgan and Ryan, gave an excellent exhibition. Elliott loet to N. A. Foden, 7 —15, 18—17, 3—15. F. M. Budd lost to H. N. Burns, B—ls, 6—15. Wilson and Watson defeated Vaughan and Evans Scott, 15—8, 13—15, 15—4. Budd and Elliott lost to Burns and Foden, 15—10, 15—8. Mr s Cotterill and Miss Glenny lost to Misses Phillips and Gray, 4 —ll, 8-11. Miss Carr and Mrs Hassall lost to Misses Morgan and Ryan, 3 —ll, s—ll. Mrs Cotterill and Miss Glenny lost to Misses Morgan and Ryan, 4 —ll, 6Miss Carr and Mrs Hassall lost to Misses Phillips and Gray, 3—ll. 3—ll. Wilson and Mrs Cotterill defeated Vaughan and Miss Phillips, 15 —8, 15—8. Watson and Miss Glenny deleated Evans Scott and Miss Morgan, 15—8, 15-9. Budd and Miss Carr lost to Burns and Miss Gray, B—ls, 13 —18. Elliott and Mrs Hassall lost to Foden and Miss Ryan, 6—15, 15 —9, 7 — 15. Totals: Wellington. 10 matches. 22 sets, 415 points; Hastings, 4 matches, 11 sets, 333 points. Mr N. A. Foden is president of the Wellington Badminton Association, and during the week-end arrangements were made to form a Hawke’s Bay Badminton Federation. The Wellington team returned by car this morning.
