UPSET IN THE HURDLES

Three Best-Backed Fall ANEMOMETER’S STEEPLES The Napier Park Bating Club's meeting was continued at Greenmeadows to-day in dull weather. There was a good attendance of the public. The course was somewhat dead. Satisfactory fields faced the starter in the various events and good racing was witnessed. The arrangements for the day were capably carried out by the secretary and his staff. A programme of popular selections by the Napier Citizens’ Band was appreciated by the public. During the running of the Waiohiki Hurdles Million, Arctic Star and Lady Spy, the heaviest backed, fell in front of the stand, robbing the race of much interest. Ridgeway, rider of Arctic Star, was badly shaken. One machine only was operating on the totalisator. Results are as under:— WAIOHIKI HACK HURDLES. Of £7O; 1J mile. G TAHOMA, Mr. W. A. Smith’s blk.g., aged, by Hunting Song— Kowerewere, 0.0 (Cavnll) 1 5 Kaola, Mr. S. Clever’s br.g., 5 years, 9.0 (Horne) 2 7 Journet, Mr. W. Henderson’s ch. g., G years, 9.0 (Deslandes) .... 3

and Jonrnet, with Arctic Star last. Over the first fence Treasure Hunt ran up to second position, with the others following as previously named, but at the hurdle in front of the stand Tahoma led from Treasure Hunt, Journet, Kaola and Mercian Lass. At this obstacle Arctic Star, Million and Lady Spy fell, thus robbing the race of the three best-hacked. Going down the back Tahoma had increased his lead to five lengths, with Treasure Hunt second. At the next fence Treasure Hunt lost life second position through nearly falling. Rounding the far turn Tahoma led from Kaola and Treasure Hunt. Tahoma still led with a big lead turning for home and at the last, fence, with the panel flat on the ground, Tahoma went on to win by six lengths from Kaola, with n further five lengths back Io Journet. Mercian Lass was fourth and Treasure Hunt last. Time, 2.40 1-5.

In the next two furlongs the order was the same, with the exception that Windward went back to last through being squeezed out on the rails. Silver Song still led round the fur turn from Thane, Contact aud Collision. Silver Song had a decided lead coming into the straight over Thane, Contact and’Collision, but the latter was gradually improving his position. Half way down the running it looked as though Silver Song would collect, but Collision, finishing most resolutely and gradually overhauled the pacemaker to get up in time to win by a head, with Royal Feast three lengths bacwlc third.
