SCHOOLBOYS’ BOXING

Tournament at Mahora EXCELLENT NIGHT’S SPORT “It was the best schoolboys’ tournament that I’ve seen,” declared an executive member of the Hawke’s Bay Boxing Association at the close of the boxing tournament conducted at the Mahora School, last evening. The fixture was staged by the H.8.8.A. on behalf of the School Committee, the proceeds being in aid of the fuel fund. Viewed from every aspect the tournament was an undoubted success. The attendance was in excess of anticipations and the schoolroom proved too small to accommodate the crowd, many intending patrons being disappointed. The actual boxing was exceptionally good, and of very high standard. Every bout, and there were 14 of them, was splendid, the boys displaying fine sportsmanship, keenness and ability. For the most part the contestants were pupils of Mahora School and their mentor, Air. Arty Hay, is to be congratulated on the successful manner in which he has brought the boys to the front.

Officials for the evening were as follow:—Referee, Mr. J. D. Donovan; judges, Messrs. I’. Shadbolt, J. Dexter, and W. J. Baillie, announcer; Air. H. G. Apperley; time-keeper, Air. V. Collelo.

The results of the various bouts were as follow:—

D. Burton (4.5) beat J. Hill (4.9). D. Sturgess (5.1) beat D. Warren (5.0.) J. Downey (6.5) beat V. Watkins (6-9). U. Cameron (5.2) beat B. Baird (5.4). J.
