CHINESE SENSATION
REBEL CRUISER FIRED ON Engagement at Long Range RETREAT TO BRITISH WATERS (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright., (Received 22, 10.15 a.m.) HONG KONG, June 22. Declaring that they had received orders from Nanking to proceed to Shanghai, the rebel cruisers left here this afternoon, but within two hours eiKountered a bigger cruiser, stated to be the Ninghai, belonging to the Northern Squadron, which opened fire at an eight-miles range. The rebels, being out of range, turned tail and returned to British waters, which were safely reached. The situation is most puzzling. Officers of the rebel cruisers stoutly deny any firing. They stated that after leaving Hong Kong they received a wireless message from the Vice-Admiral of the Nanking Navy, who was aboard the Ninghai, instructing them to return to Hong Kong to await further orders. The mystery is unsolved, as the British keeper of the Waglan lighthouse definitely declares ho saw a dozen shots fired.
H.M.S. Defender and H.M.S. Regent hurriedly left the harbour, it is reported, with the object of watching the Ninghai, which is stated to be operating in British waters.
The situation is creating a tremendous sensation locally. Meanwhile, the rebel cruisers are anchored in the harbour.
