LET’S GO HIKING!

Hiking is one of the finest patrol activities that Scouts cun inUuige in, us it is not only good exercise, but it also enable® much of your Scout training to be put into practice. The Seagull patrol of the Frimley troop are very keen on hiking and the following report of a recent hike of this patrol is quite interesting.

“On Sunday, June 9, the patrol met at the corner of Karnmu road,” states the patrol log book. “We proceeded along the Havelock road towards Havelock, which wo reached at about 10.30 a.ni. The Havelock stream was noticeably swollen and dirty. We followed the road on past the bowling green and up to the reservoir, where we filled our billies, this being the last place where we could procure water. Wo then took to the hills, and it was here that we found our staves most useful. We decided to visit Wota Cave, which is situated just on this side of the entrance to Te Mata Park, but, owing to the recent wet weather a small stream was flowing into it, which made it dangerous to enter.

“On leaving thu vicinity of the cave we set across the hills to the road above the Te Mata plantation, where wo stayed a while, viewing Hastings through a pair of field glasses. Wo reached the Peak at 12.30, and set to work to boil our billy. We spent tome time practising plaiting flax, which wo found at the back of tho Peak. At about 2.30 the sky clouded over, so we commenced our homeward journey, staying a while in a valley in front of the Peak, which contained native trees and creepers. At a shingle pit by the reservoir “Fluffy” gave us a demonstration of how to get to the bottom, and finished up upside down.

“From here our route was the same as when we were coming out, but wo were a much more tired party when we arrived back in Hastings nt six o’clock than we were when wo set out." Now, lenders, what nbout petting your patrols to go for similar hikes “ It’s great fun. and you’ll thoroughly enjoy yourselves.
