OBITUARY

Mr. William Ferguson The death occurred yesterday morning of Mr William Ferguson, whose notable record of community service has passed into Wellington’s history. He was a gifted engineer, who probably did more than anyone to make the port of Wellington one of the best equipped south of the line. Born in London in 1852, Mr Ferguson came to New Zealand in 1883, and in the succeeding year was appointed engineer and secretary to the Wellington Harbour Board, a position he held till his retirement in 1908. He held the position of managing director of the Wellington Gas Company from 1908 to 1916, when he was appointed chairman of the National Efficiency Board, a post he retained for four years. He was a foundation member of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers, and president in 1919-20.
