A RUNAWAY HORSE
Motorist’s Narrow Escape By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, Juno 20. A motorist, Dr. J. 8. Hudson, of Herne Bay, narrowly escaped serious injury when the motor-car he was driving collided with a runaway horse and eart at an intersection. The shaft of the cart penetrated the driver’s compartment of the car, passing under Dr. Hudson’s legs. After the collision the car capsized and was damaged extensively. The horse had to tyj destroyed. The cart, which was owned by Walter Buchanan, Limited, bakers, had stopped. The driver, Mr J. Macown, was making adjustments to the harness on the horse when the owner of a motor-cycle parked immediately behind the cart started the engine. The horse took fright and bolted. Holding on to the reins Mr Macown was dragged along the road until the horse edged toward the footpath. Mr Macown then struck a telephone pole and was forced to release his hold.
The horse galloped off and collided with a heavy sedan car driven by Dr. Hudson. The doctor swerved in an endeavour to avoid the animal, but the ear capsized on to the tram tracks. Dr. Hudson was tho only occupant of the car, and was not injured, except for a few minor cuts received from flying fragments of glass, and was able to clamber out through the window. Although ho had been dragged a considerable distance and had been thrown against a telephone pole with some force, the driver of the cart, Mr Macown, was not injured.
