TRENTHAM RACES

W.R.C. Autumn Meeting REVIEW OF THE RUNNERS I (By “The Barb.”) The Wellington autumn meeting opens tomorrow at Trentham and will be concluded on .Monday. The acceptances ate not quite up to the numbers of last year, but are very satisfactory all the same. The from both islands will be seen in action and, although Trentham is recognised as the, “punters’ graveyard,” the races are not *o puzzling at this stage of the season as in winter-time or spring. Hawke’s Bay stables will be represented by Count Willonyx, Grand Vizier, Cuddle, Speed and Lady Spy. Hawke's Bay owners witli horses trained outside the district are better represented. Following is a review of the form:— 12.12: ST. LEGER STAKES Of £300; 1J mile. Sporting Sweet Music 8 5 Blood 8 10 Variant 8 5 It i,s a, great pity that only three remain in, two fillies and one colt. Our wealthy owners do not patronise these races as they should, in fact, to my way of thinking it is a duty they should recognise. 'Uns race has gradually come down in value, because of owners not supporting it, and the W.RC., in the face of such indifference, it, to be commended for retaining this race on its programme. Sporting Blood won the Harcourt Cup last October, to go on to the N.Z. Cup meeting and win the Riecarton Handicap, N.Z. Derby and Canterbury Cup, and was then considered our best three-year-old. In the slimmer, however, he ran very poorly at Ellerslie, but at that time looked all to pieces. Now he is said to be back to spring form. Sweet .Music has won one small race only. Variant won the N.Z. Oak«> last November mid at the A.ICC. summer meeting was second in the Royal Stakes. She has been galloping exceptionally well of late. It will be a toss-up who is favourite, Variant or Sporting Blood, 12.52: KI.MU HIGH WEIGHT Of £200; 1J mile.

Red Sun has been a great disappointment. His bust effort tint* aeaeon was to run second in the Manawatu ( up. Colossian is a consistent performer Hom the other island, llaeie Tonu won at his last visit to Trentham, to <• Inprise he likes the sting out ot th l going. Bold Jim is at home in races of this description. Grand Blow is an horn st plugger and as hard as nails. At Woodville he ran a first, second and third, so should command attention. Te Ua was second in this event last season, and this Acre gelding hats won than one highweight. Chile is better over bin dies. Bacchus Marsh was in the money at Bulls. Linoleum lias no credentials, but Royal Papa has run one or two good races. llighweights are always puzzling and anything but good races to bet on, but maybe when the final investments me made most will be on Colossian, Crand Blow and Red Sun. 1.35: TRIAL PLATE Of £200; 7 furlongs.

Confiscation has run one or two fait taces of late, but she has been hard to follow all the same. Count Willonyx shaped at Napier a<s if he would be better suited now by the extra distance. Delium has won a race to give promise, but has failed since and possibly the seven furlongs will not be to his liking. Grand Vizier has no form. Inveiesk has run sufficiently well this season to be seriously considered. Pukeko won the second day at Woodville. State Bank has been costly. Vinco is reputed to he the goods, but has yet to show | up in a race. Possibly now, with racing experience, he may be m a position to repeat his track form. Ihi co that m<ij appeal to backers are Count Willonyx, Inveresk and Vinco.

Here we find a field of lit to grace any classic race, in fact, it is doubtful if any of the juvenile classics have this season brought together a lot to equal this field Legatee won the G.N. Foal Stakes last Auckland meeting, but was out of a place in the Royal Stakes. Gay Sheik, irom I Auckland, has run some fine races, but I io my way of thinking just misses being i up to classic form, so at 8 I'B is being I asked a serious question, llororatn is j not robust, but she is a tough filly ami at ( hristmas 'inn won thne ra« es and run a second in as many stalls. I ThQ T<» Tray filly will m:ue ’em Havel, i Severe goes fast and has a Wellesley Stakes to her credit. Kotou is said to | have come on nicely and to be staying ■ on better as was to be expected from a i colt by Night Raid out of a Linumd I mare.’ Round Up is a good aveiage ' handicap two-year-old. Alchemic i- ; consistent and won at his last start. Woodville. Dehham has yet to win a ' race, but has filled minor places both in Australia and New Zealand. Uulojoy i> i fair and won at Wairarapa with Horo ' rata second, but the latter ran off' the 1 course at the home bend. Greek Shepherd is a colt that has not been bustled and 1 believe now shmvs pro I miso of developing into a topnbtclu r and over six furlongs may show the i northern youngsters how. Hunt’ng i Scene is a moderate so far. Le Gr'ii’l. I a fine big colt bv Postering from th it grand old marc Eulogy, i' faking time ‘to get into racing trim Entail In*

been a big disappointment. Autopeen has no form but Going Gay i<s a possibility. This should be a good betting race with perhaps most enquiries lor Creek Shepherd, Legatee and Hororata. 2.57: THE THOMPSON HANDICAP Of £600; 1 mile.

This race was fully reviewed in the “Tribune” the other evening and, as nothing has happened since to alter that summing i'p it stands as then, viz.: Gay Blonde, Fracas, Guarantee. 3.40: TINAKORI HANDICAP Of £200; 7 furlongs.

Hack conditions. Hostis is a good one to have on one’s side. Illuminate won an open welter recently after being defeated the same day in the hurdles. Epris is another South Islander that is above the ordinary hack class. At the last Wellington meeting he was second and then went on to Dunedin and won both days. Marching Song might, but not to my way of thinking. Lapel won at the last Trentham fixture. Reipar «o far lias been best over shorter distances. Jubilee Song won at Wanganui, his last start. Of the remainder Aussie Ra has raced best, but at the same time lias not com? up to expectations. It is hard to see what will be better backed than Hostis, Epris and Jubilee Song.

This field was reviewed the other evening when the best backing was considered as likelv to come for Emissary, Mother Superior and Kemal Pasha. 5.2: SILVERSTREAM HACK HANDICAP

Hack conditions. Imperial Spear has been winning consistently m tile Canterbury distnet. Knock Uut won m her fast start at Banks Peninsula, but was considered a little lucky. Nightform iias won in both hack and open company and is regarded afe the making oi a good handicap performer. Hunting Bag tailed at Napier. Round Score races well at Trentham. Bonnie Vale failed badly at Bulls, but this form cannot be accepted as correct, (fibys Last- is only average. Tahurangi was second in the big race at Opunake. Timorous surprised over fcix at Woodville. Lapel, Dorado and Moonbeam all have winning form. Ingenuity won at Taranaki, while Darecourt has won at both the last two meetings he has attended. Golden King is another winner from down south. Knowledge won the Trial at Dunedin, but has not been in the money since. Most money may be invested on the chances of Nightform, Darecourt and Imperial Spear.
