INTER-CLUB MATCHES Hastings Turn Tables on H.B. EXCITING MIXED DOUBLES (By “Sideline.”) The return match between the Hastings and Hawke's Bay Clubs played on Saturday last resulted in a victory for the Hastings Club, whose A team won by 14 matches to 10, while the B team lost only seven matches of the 23 played. Noel Wilson playing No. 1 consider ably strengthened the local side at'd won all three matches, although in tne combined doubles with Miss AL Gle’uiy was fully extended by Milburn and Mrs Milburn to win the final set 6 —4. The Napier pair were leading I —J and 4<luxe on Milburn N service in the thirl set, only to lose the game when they looked to be in a winning position. The Napier women again proved too strong for Hastings. Mrs Milburn, Mrs Mawson and Miss A. Ormond defeating Miss Budd, Alls Cotterill ami Alias 1 ■ Palmer by comfortable margins, wh le Napier also won the two top women s doubles. With such a strong men's team it is unfortunate that the women should be so weak, and unfortunately there do not appear to be any younger players improving who can take the place of the leading players. Miss AL Wellwood is playing very good tennis nt. present, and she has only to go in improving to be higher up in the team ui’xt time. It. D. Sharpe, who has been selected l'o t - the Hawke’s Bay- team, had a day oil on Saturday, being defeated easily by Robinson in the singles, while he also lost the doubles and combined*. Sharpe has been playing excellent tennis earlier in the season and it appeal* as though he has gone “stale.” On his plav on Saturday he hardly deserves a place in the Hawke's Bay team. Christie Cup Matches. “•Sideline ” understands that the team originally selected for the Christ.e Cup match against Alanawatu is to remain as follows: —Mrs Milburn, Alts Mawson, Miss Ormond (Napier), Mis Cotterill, Misses Budd and Glenny (Hastings), R. H. Milburn (Napier), X. R. C. Wilson, IL Elliott, J. N. Lowry, R. D. Sharpe (Hastings'), R. Howe (Dannevirke). Play will commence at 10 a.m. to-morrow on the Hawke’s Bay Club's courts. A further challenge tor the cup has been received from Waiiarapa, and provided the Hawke's Bay team withstand the challenge from Alanawatu, and the present indications point that way, then the match against Wairara,a will be played next Saturday. \n endeavour is being made to have this match played at Hastings, Luxford Shield Contest. When these notes appear it is likely that the gfinal match of the Luxlord Shield competition will have taken place yesterday. The match was between Hastings and St. Joseph’s, aud though the outcome should of a certainty be a victory for Hastings, the extent of its win will be learnt fvith interest, as on the number of sets wou will depend the destiny of the trophy. At the present stage Park, having completed their matches, are leading Hastings by 85 points to 70, and to win the trophy Hastings will have to win every game against St. Joseph’s, whom they beat 13—3 in the first, round. In tho event of Hastings losing only set then a count up of the games will have to be made to decide the competition winners.
