TROUBLE OVER DRAIN

Town Board and Council Despite the representations made by the Taradale Town Board little progress has been made with the timbering ol the main drain on the Greenmeadows road which is under the control of the Hawke’s Bay County Council. When the road was widened about eight years ago the Town Board completed its section of the drain by concreting the bottom and a portion of both sides. The council was approached at the time to attend to its section ot the drain, which is only four chains in length, so as to prevent the side.' from falling in and becoming a danger The board later again approached the council and offered to carry out the work if the council provided the timber, which was agreed to. A» no timber was made available and m view of the danger through the sides falling in. the board timbered up one side, finding its own timber. A rhort time ago a small quantity of timber was placed in the board’s .yard and last night the council wrote to the hoard enquiring as to how the work was progressing. The overseer, Mr W (>. Jarvis, explained that the drain was a county drain and that both sides were of soft formation and scoured easily, having been washed out at the time ot the 1<97 flood. The board timbered one side for the purposes of safetv. lor which the council did not supply the timber as agreed upon. the work. Such a way of doing a thii was unsatisfactory. Th< council hi agreed to find all the timber and it should do so. The board left the matter in the hands of the overseer to ee that the timber required was forthcoming.
