H.B. JOCKEY CLUB
Extra Permit for March 30 NOMINATIONS ON WEDNESDAY ' By ■ Ihe Barb.'’ Last racing season the Poverty Bay luil (lub held a three-day meeting in February, but this season, on account of the financial position, could utilise only two of the three days. Consequently there was a permit going abegging in this district, and out of consideration lor the local owners the Hawke’s Bay Jot key < lub decided to apply lor same. The application was granted by the Minister of internal Affairs, hence the extra day's rang at, Hastings on March 30, for which nominations close on Wednesday next, March 20. Close on a hundred horses are tn work on the Hastings tracks alone, and it was mainly to cater lor these that our metropolitan club decided to hold the special race meeting. I he committee here recognise the hut that owners are very hard put to make ends meet under the prcteni racing conditions in the Dominion. The staaes offering compare very favourably with other cluos 01 similar size ami, as the president m the H.B,J.C. points out, it is tar bett> r to have a meeting at tour own back door, even if the stakes are not exactly up to those oi the larger centres, lor a £7O race at home is equal to pretty well double the amount n you have to go to Wellington. The date, March 30, will be found most suitable to owners and traiueis, as Manawatu is a week previous, while the week following is the J’ahiatua tuoday meeting. Thus Poverty Bay owners contemplating making the trip to I’ahiatua have the one day meeting at Hastings en route. Then after J’ahiatua it is not very long to wait tor the Easter meetings without returning home The programme offers inducement for all classes of horses excepting hurdlers. It was considered at the tune of ihe framing of the programme that the going might be a little hard, so a liighweight was put on instead ol a jumping event. There is no open race for middle distance horses, but horses <>f this cla-s that may be racing later on at other meetings will be able to have a pipeopener here over 0J furlongs. The first race, run over a distance ol 5$ turiongs at the set weight of 8-7, is tor maiden horses at time oi starting. Ihe ie Mahanga Highweight of t'7'i, run over nine jurlongs, is open to horses that have competed in hurdle of steeplechases, qualified hunters and horses eligible to compete in back races. Only recognised hurdle or steeplechase jockeys will be permitted to ride. Some owners have asked how many hurdle or steeples it is necessary to have started in and we have been informed that one is quite sufficient. A six-furlong hack race is included as well as the Hastings Hack Cup, which carries a trophy and will be run over a mile and a quarter, so that horses of thi,s grade have been well looked after. A Novice Handicap has been included for horses that have never won a race or races to the collective value ol £7O. Judging by remarks passed by trainer's, this addition of a semi-hack maiden is most welcome. The Juvenile run over five furlongs 16 solely for two-year-olds, an item also welcomed by owners, as at Wiupufcurau, Hastings and Napier recently three-year-olds have also been allowed to compete, and out, of the five races run under ijiese conditions tour were won by three-year-olds.
