« * Automobile Officer’s Report — SEALING AND REPAIRING — The monthly report by the service officer of the Automobile Association (II.B.), was presented before the meeting held ut Napier yesterday afternoon. Thirty-four new members were elected. Apologies for absence were »e--ceived from Messrs T. Parker and McCormick. There were present Messrs J. M. Edmundson (chairman), G. C. Tripe, A. Dysart, Haskell Anderson, Meivillo Bell, R. P. Kay, Dr. W. D. Fitz Gerald, Capt. L. Forde. Dr. Fitz Gerald, who for some months had acted as chairman while Air Edmundson was away in England, welcomed the chairman. He said lie realised in the past few months the extent of Mr Edmundson’s knowledge of and interest in motoring. Fellow members heartily concurred in the speaker’s greeting, and their pleasure I in knowing he was restored to health. In his report upon the different roads ‘ in the association area, the service officer, Mr Roy F. Stace, commented as follows:— • Napier-Wairoa.—The two coat seating work from Petane to Whirinaki is now completed, thus making a length of 11 miles of sealed surface from the Napier borough boundary. Road widening work on the Waikoau hill is now completed. The limestone rock obtained from the road widening work has been crushed into a fine grade of road metal and is being stacked ou the road ai various places for maintenance purposes. Men from No. 3 camp are nowworking around Lake Tutira while No. 1 camp men are working beyond ISandy Creek bridge. The section between th' Mohaka river and the Wairoa borough boundary has been metalled through Out. Within the Wairoa borough the placing of two coats of seal is now in progress. Wairoa Gisborne (via Tiniroto).— This road is now open for traffic. Several deviations have been made and metalling work is now in progress. Frasertown-I.ake Howe and Ruakituri Valley.—Extensive metalling tw in progress on both roads.

Napier-Wellington.—Washout bridge. The Rope Construction Co. have commenced operations on the new bridge. Decking repairs were carried out on the Waitangi bridge. The Hawke’s Bay County deserve to be congratulated on the method they adopted of carrying out this work with the minimum of inconvenience to traffic, all work being done between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.nv Sealing repairs are still being carried out on the To AnteWaipawa section. The contractor has made a start on the sealing work in the Waipukurau county section and has completed from the top of the Sanatorium hill to the Maharakiki bridge, and a first-class job has been rhade. While this work was in progress it was necessary for traffic to detour via Hatuma. Detour signs were erected on the road approved by the Waipukurau county. Subsequently, however, one of the detour signs, which was in the Waipawa county, was altered by the Waipawa county engineer. This was the cause of certain motorists going astray. This rpad will again be closed for some three days early next week so that sealing may be completed to the foot of the hill. Third coal sealings are almost completed on the Taka pan plains section. Napier Taupo.—A 4ft. pipe culvert 36ft. long was placed at the Walonu Station replacing the old wooden platform bridge. The culvert has been i placed down stream some 40ft. which : will cut out a very sharp bend into the old structure. The contract has been let for the construction of a new bridge across the Waipunga stream. The metalling has now been completed on the Maori Gully deviation and (lie gangs are employed taking off sharp corners south of the deviation. While the new chords are being erected it will be necessary for traffic between Waipukurau and Porangahnn to dotmir '"■or the ‘‘Big Hili’’ road. ,
