Variable Demand at Hastings GOOD SORTS SELL WELL Wethers comprised a very big proportion of the store sheep entry at yesterday’s sale at Stortford Lodge, . the offering in this section totalling ' 15,000 head. Back-country drafts were I very prominent, including a number or' entries from the Wairoa district. Breeding ewes met a rather variable I market, with good lines of sheep selling at late rates, and poorer and . inferior sorts showing a slight decline. Wethers, partly on account of the large numbers on offer, were somewhat sticky in selling, and several pens failed to meet the market. Store ewes met a good reception and soid well, while good lambs sold strongly. Lighter and smaller lots, however, were inclined to drag. Top price of the day was 29/-, secured for a back-country line of twotooth ewes, of good type, well grown and in quite good order, while wethers made to 22/- for a good line of forward young sheep. Demand was chiefly local, and was well maintained throughout the sale On better lines ot’ sheep, inferior lots meeting with more moderate inquiry. A selection of the entries and prices paid, from which an idea of the state of the market may be obtained, is as follow:— A line of 112 woolly lambs, dipped, lightly framed find fresh conditioned, made ‘ll/-. A pen of 115 soundly-mouthed owes, late shorn, medium framed and store conditioned, lealised 13/9. A pen of 141 two and four-tooth wethers, well framed and strongly woolled, in excellent order, sold out at 22/1. A lightly framed pen of 92 soundly mouthed ewes made 13/8. Running with (Southdown rams since March 1, a draft of ltd four and five year ewes, well framed and mouthed, in store condition, passed at 17/6. A high country entry of 395 lambs, all dipped, fairly well grown and in good active order, sold at 15/2. A line of .199 fattening ewes, fairly framed and in good store order, met the market at 12/5. A pen of 250 wethers, strongly woolled, well framed and store conditioned, sold out at 18/4. A Puketitiri entry of 171 five and six-year ewes, soundly mouthed, fairly framed and store conditioned, made 16/3. A pen of 196 four-tooth ewes, with Southdown rams included, offered on account of an Otane vendor, fairly framed, store conditioned, carrying a useiul type of wool, realised 22/9, a further 160 selling at 22/6. A back-country line of 162 wethers, coarsely woolled, medium framed and store conditioned, passed at 17/6. A similar pen of 233 made 17/-. A line of 126 soundly mouthed ewes, well framed and woolled, in store condition. met the market at 18/2. A line of 160 Romney crossbred lambs, principally ewes, fairly grown, in good active order, met good coinI petition to sell out at 15/5. Eighty six-year-old ewes, fairly framed, store conditioned, mixed in the mouths, realised 14/3. A draft of 120 black-face lambs, somewhat mixed in sizes, in good order, made 15/2. A line of 187 whiteface wether lambs, medium framed and store conditioned, made 13/1. An Olfig Station lino of 153 five year-old owes, strongly woolled. fairly framed and mouthed, store conditioned, sold at 15/6. In from Otane and offered on account of William White and Sons, a pen of 163 six-tooth ewes, running with Southdown rams since March 1, well framed and in good order, strongly woolled, sold at 26/2. A lino of 224 wether lambs, whiteface, down from Puketitiri and on account of Mr W. Turner, well grown and ii* good order, realised 15/-. A pen of 143 four and five-year old ewes, fairly framed and woolled, store conditioned, made 17/3. A Ngarotu entry of 132 five-year ew*s, chiefly strong woolled, quite well mouthed, light-store conditioned, fairly framed, sold at 17/1. A line of 120 six-tooth ewes, running with Southdown rams since March 2. medium framed, mixed in the wool, store conditioned, realised 20/6. A line of 544 black-face lambs, down by lorry from the Wairoa district, dipped, lightly framed, and fresh con ditioned, passed at 12/6. A pen of 126 fattening ewes, fairly framed, store conditioned, with fair mouths, sold at 12/6. A pen of 140 five-year-old ewes, with a few younger sheep included, lightly framed, store conditioned, fairly mouthed, made 15/2. A draft of 152 wethers, dipped, well grown and in good store order, realised 20/6. A line of 174 five-year-old ewes, in light store order, mixed in the mouths, and in the wool, passed at 14/-. A Whakarara entry of 89 store wethers, medium framed, sold out at 16/7.
