WOOL MARKET

THIRD NAPIER SALE Official Range of Prices BROKERS’ REPORTS At the close of the sale in Napier yesterday the brokers held their customary meeting for the purpose of noting an official price range from among the realisations at the sale. These were as follow:—

BROKERS’ REPORTS. DE PELICHET, McLEOD AND CO.

De Pelichet, McLeod and Co., Ltd., report having held their third sale of the season, when they submitted a catalogue of 3053 bales, including 428 bales from Gisborne. There was the usual large attendance of overseas and local buyers. Competition was quite keen up to buyers’ limits, and the sale went with a decided swing. Most of the wool offered consisted of ewe wool, and carried more condition than the two previous sales. Super and good wools were on par with January prices, but medium and low grade wools were par to a shade easier. Pieces were on a par to a shade easier. The sale of lambs’ wools was extremely erratic, and barely up to January prices. Practically no hogget wools were sold in oud catalogue.

Our highest price was for PUNAWAITAI over ECN , a pure Romney clip. This clip sold on a par to probably better prices than ruling at the last sale. The get-up of this clip is so excellent, as well as the quality of the wool, that it always commands extreme figures. The actual prices for the whole clip were as follows: — Three bales super AAE 9Jd, 16 AE 3d, 17 BE "Jd, 13 CE 63d, 9 DE 6Jd, 4 T 6}d, 9 Ist lambs 9Jd, 4 2nd lambs 3d, 6 3rd lambs 6}d, 5 necks 7Jd, 8 Ist pieces 7}d, 4 2nd pieces 5Jd, 9 bels sd. FARMERS’ CO-OP. ASSN. LTD. The Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Co-opera-tive Association Ltd., with which is associated Hoadley, Son and Stewart, Ltd., report, as follows: — The third series of wool sales took place yesterday with a total offering of 24,264 bales, of which wo catalogued 5492 bales, including 1148 bales of binned wools. Our offering came from every part of the province and was fully representative of Hawke's Bay grown wools. It included a number of very well known clips, some of which were early shorn and light in condition. The bulk, however, were later shorn and heavier in grease.

There was a full attendance of buyers and competition was exceedingly keen and sustained throughout the sale, the heaviest commitments being on behalf of Bradford, but good support came from Japan, Canada, Australia and the Dominion mills. France dominated the market for necks, pieces and bellies, but Germany was only moderately interested. Hogget wool was from par to a shade easier, fine wools from Jd to Jd lower, medium and coarse ware firm and attracted strong competition at unchanged prices. Cotted and low crossbreds were from par to id better, but inferior and seedies were easier. Lambs’ wool was not in keen demand except for super types, which were on a par with last sale’s rates. Necks, pieces and bellies were unchanged, but very seedy and inferior lots were not easy to quit. Crutchings were scarce and in good demand at fully id up.

In face of the quietness of business in Bradford and the decline in the price of tops recorded last week, yesterday ’s prices may bo considered very satisfactory, especially taking into account the heavier condition of the offering, and realising full parity with the closing prices of the recent London sales.

At the third wool ealo of the season i we submitted a catalogue of 3700 bales

of wool to a lull bench of buyers. Competition was very keen right Hi rough our catalogue and was also well spread all sections participating. It was very noticeable that superior lines of crossbred were in keen demand and occasioned spirited bidding. With few exceptions the sale may be quoted as fully firm on last sale, with super lots perhaps a thade dearer and inferior sorts a little easier.

Lambs’ wool in our opinion was if anything cheaper for good sorts whilst inferior were in sellers’ favour. Wo should say that Bradford was the principal buyer, with strong competition from the Continent and Japan, and German competition was more pronounced.

We sold 94 per cent, of our catalogue under the hammer and quote prices as under :—

Our catalogue consisted of 4650 bales of which approximately 86 per cent, was sold. The selection was a medium one only, a few good wools being submitted, but there was a fair percentage of very ordinary top-making wools. Some of the clips were shorn early and are now’ showing signs of yellowness, appearing more like old wools than new’. Competition was general with Bradford the principal operators for fleece wools, France as usual taking the bulk of the necks, pieces and billies. The main feature of the sale was the keen demand for preparing wools of medium to coarse crossbred which were a good halfpenny dearer than at the January sale. Fine crossbreds were slightly easier but this was anticipated from indications given in recent reports from other centres. Necks, pieces and bellies realised prices slightly above brokers' expectations, due to the keen demand from the French section. Lambs’ wool was also keenly sought after by Continental and Australian mills, and could be quoted fully firm on recent quotations.

The bidding generally throughout the sale was the keenest experienced foi some time, but of course buyers were forced to keep strictly within their limits. It is expected that there will not be any material change in prices for the remainder of the season.

We strongly recommend growers who contemplate offering their wool in the March sale to meet the market and not to hamper the broker with hard and fast reserves. Quite a number of clips in yesterday’s sale were passed in within id of the valuations which had been made absolute reserves by the growers. Had the broker the right to use a little discretion many of these clips could have been sold, as when the top lot is passed in the bidding often slackens oft for the remainder of the line. Furthermore, it is not always possible to sell the lot after the sale owing to the fact that a buyer has filled his orders and in quite a number of instances owners regretted having made the valuations hard and fast reserves.

WILLIAMS AND KETTLE, LTD. Williams and Kettle, Ltd. report:— We held our third sale of the wool season yesterday, when we placed before the buyers a catalogue comprising 4801 bales. Our offerings would have been considerably bigger had not the owneis of several big clips withdrawn their wool prior to the sale. The catalogue comprised a mixture of early and late shorn wools, the former having been held back in the hope of an improved market, which did not materialise. The condition of the wool was in keeping with what might be expected at this time of the year, though there was a little more than usual of the hairy type which is so detrimental to prices. Lambs’ W’ool was on the whole more superior to the offerings in January, and we were rather disappointed in the results, the market being distinctly erratic. Corriedale wool, of which we had a few lots, lacked competition and appeared to be little sought after by the buyers. Bidding was extremely spirited and well spread, there being more continental buyers operating. Bradford, as usual, lifted the biggest weight of the wool, and was the mainstay of the market. France operated freely in skirtings and bellies, whilst Germany bought a few lots. Lots suitable for Japan were well competed for. Unfortunately, the Dominion mills wore not operating, and this had a marked effect, especially on lambs’ wool, the market for which was extremely erratic.

Our opinion of the market is as follows:— Average to good and super crossbred firm on January rates; fine wools barely par to a halfpenny down; inferior fleece of all qualities erratic, lambs’ wool very erratic, Jd to Jd down; pieces and bellies were firm on January when their condition was taken into consideration; crutchings were very firm and were from par to a halfpenny dearer. LOAN AND MERCANTILE AGENCY CO., LTD. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, report having held the third wool sale of the current season in this centre yesterday, when a total catalogue of approximately 24,600 bales was submitted, of which their quota was 2,568 bales. There was a full and representative bench of buyers and competition from the opening to the close of the sale was very keen, ami at times excited, but all buyers were working under st riel lv defined limits. Prices compared with recent auctions can be described as very firm for medium and line crossbreds, but the coarser crossbreds can be quoted from very firm to in sellers’ favour. BeCjes and pieces were eagerly competed tor, and for these prices were slightly l»o-

ter than at recent auctions. Lambs’ wool, except for super lots which were firm, were*about 3d. lower than recent rates, but this easing can be attributed in part to the lambs’ wool at yesterday’s sale being dull and dusty and quite a percentage carrying a fair amount of seed as well. Crutchings were in keen demand and for these prices were inclined to be slightly dear er than recent rates. The wool did not open in as good condition as at the sale here in January, it being much heavier in condition and quite a proportion of it very hairy in the britch, and the bulk of the entry can be described as from average to good topmaking sorts, very few super lots being included in the offering. The following arc some of the prices realised:—
