BOXING TOURNEY

Amateur Championships

BOUTS FOR TO-MORROW Nearly 30 South Islanders, comprising the teams from Southland, Marlborough and Motueka-Rikawa., arrived in Hastings by the mail train last evening, they being the first contingent of boxers, trainers and delegates attending the New Zealand Amateur Boxing Championship tournament, which commences at the Municipal Theatre, Hastings, to-morrow evening. For the convenience of Napier patrons, special buses will leave each evening at 6.15 and 7 p.rn. aud return after the contests. Nimon’s buses will run the usual time table. The real rush set in this morning when a number of North Island teams arrived by car and later by train. The visitors are being met byMr J. Stickland, secretary of the Hawke’s Bav Boxing Association, and other members of the executive and conveyed by cars to their respective lodging places. This evening, by courtesy of 'the managements of the Arcadia, Regent, Cosy and State theatres, all the visitors will be given picture entertain ment.

To-morrow will be a busy day for all connected with the three-day boxing tournament. At 9.30 o’clock in the morning His Worship the. Mayor, Mr 0. A. “Maddison, will extend a civic welcome to the visitors on behalf of the citizens of Hastings and the residents of the surrounding districts. This will take place at the Assembly Hall and it is hoped that there will be a big attendance of the public. At 10 o’clock the contestants taking part in the tournament will undergo a medical examination and at. 3 o’clocK in the afternoon they will weigh-in, to see that they conform to the limits placed on the various divisions. As there are 24 bouts to be staked in the first round of the preliminary contests it has been found necessary to commence the tournament at 7 o'clock in the evening.
