WAIPUKURAU COUNCIL ——— SMOKING IN THEATRE. From Our Own Correspondent. WAIPUKURAU. September 17. At. the meeting of the Borough Council last, night a letter was received from the Prime Minister stating that the councils resolution protesting against the extension of the life of Parliament bad been received and would receive consideration. The fireman on duty at the theatre on the night of the school ball reported having experienced some difficulty in getting men to refrain from smoking in the theatre and that be had to warn several ot them on more than one occasion The Mayor said that the fireman’s task in keeping a check on this nuisance was a thankless one. Cr. McCarthy: I would be inclined to make an example of some of those offenders, not on this occasion, but when a notice is put up stating that smoking is prohibited. The council took a serious view of the offence and decided to place notices prohibiting smoking. An offer of flowering gum trees for beautification purposes at the cemetery, from Miss McNutt, was received with thanks. The question of providing a stand for the convenience of the Town Band when giving open-air concerts at A'deane Park was dir-'ussed, and it was decided that Cr.
