Thieves in Waipukurau POLICE GIVE CHASE Car Abandoned on Plains By Telegraph—Special to “Tribune.” WAIPUKURAU, Sept. 17. Abandoning their car on the roadside when they saw the police coining to intercept them, two young men made a quick getaway cross country under cover of darkness at about 3 o’clock this morning after committing a series of burglaries in Waipukurau.
They broke into Yates’ Cnsli Stores and stole tobacco, and while taking benzine from a kerbside pump were seen by the nightwatchman and made off in a car. The nightwatchman got in touch with Constable Sutton, giving the number of the vehicle, but in the meantime the thieves made off in a hurry, travelling in the direction of Takapau. Constable Sutton communieated with the police there, and as a result Constable Mullin immediately set out in a car to intercept them on the Takapau plains. The thieves saw him, left their car ou the roadside and made off on foot. Constables Sutton and Mullin curried out a thorough search, but were hampered by the dark-
The intruders gained entry to Yates' by smashing a skylight at the back and climbing through. They helped themselves to practically the whole stock of tobacco and walked out the front, leaving the door ajar. They also left two tyre levers in the back of the shop, which obviously had been used as jemmies. They also broke into Boyer’s billiard saloon, evidently under the impression that this was a warehouse. They half prised the lock oft the back door and finally forced a window.
The third robbery took place at Wells’ garage, when a lock was smashed off a bowser and 25 gallons of benzine taken. While at this the men were seen by the nightwatchman, who advised the police.
