TRACK GOSSIP

(By

“The Barb.”)

Marsong and Blue Boy returned to Hastings from Wanganui on Saturday evening by motor float, whilst Litnbohin and Hunting Jay came back by the mad train. The two latter are not likely to fulfil their Foxton engagements.

The balance of the Hawke's Bay horses from Wanganui returned on Sunday, but J. M. Cameron’s team remained, as they are going on to Foxton, where Gold Trail may pick them up at the end of the week. Cameron returned home at the conclusion of the Wanganui meeting to superintend the training of the balance of his string.

With many Hastings horses and trainers absent this week-end very little fast work was done on the local tracks Saturday morning.

Slippery, who was turned out for a spell after his unsuccessful trip to the National meeting, was not allowed to eat the oats of idleness very long, as he is back in his old box at W. D. Young's, and has been nominated for the Flying Handicap at Napier.

Kentucky Song and the two-year-old Blue Garter (Garter Blue—Putarino) ran their three furlongs in 38isees., which was about the .average of the gallops of the morning.

Peter's Pence, carrying fully 10st., was going easily at the finish of four furlongs in 53secs. to finish with The Grasper (Mercian King—Cetus). The latter will have his first race at Napier Park.

Heliotype and Glasslough ran their once round in 2mins. 3secs., with the former going the better of the pair, although both could have improved slightly on the time.

Royal Bengal, doing it easily, and Lady Wessex, did half a mile in 53secs. The former has been giving a little trouble to his trainer of late but is all right again.

Dusky Crown and Sybilsong (Tractor —Royal Song) took 53Jsecs. to do the same distance. The latter, who is a half-sister to Mercian Prince, is down to have her first race at Napier.

Swift and Sure, who can always be relied upon to give a good gallop in private, ran his seven furlongs, alone, in 1.33 J—a very fair effort.

Cawbeen, who, to all outward signs, has recovered from her recent illness, strode over three furlongs leisurely in 42secs.

•» « * De Trop took 55secs. to go half a mile which, from a time point of view, was disappointing, as she generally does much better than this.

Abbey Feale took 64isecs. to do five furlongs, and as she was going well within herself the effort was pleasing.

Queen’s Pride, going very easily, finished ahead of Sabatini and Flamingo at tho end of five furlongs in 64isecs.

Waihine Nui proved too good for the Potoa gelding, Potent, in their halfmile gallop in 53secs., which appeared to be the fashionable time of the morning. Tho former cjontinues to show improvement.

Hornpipe and Gold Trail ran their mile rather easily in 1.50. The former, who is the three-year-old gelding by Captain Bunsby—Stardanccr. impressed in this gallop as one most likely to do well over a middle distance later on.

Black Magic got a ‘‘fly” on Pukehou at the beginning of their five-furlong gallop, which allowed her to finish well in front in 65secs.

Lavina, alone, was given an easy gallop over five furlongs, which she left behind in 65’secs. This mare is gradually coming back to her last season’s form.

Mercian Queen and Silage were together all the way to register 1.21 J for three-quarters of a mile.

First Chapter and Queen Salute moved most attractively in a run down the straight.
