WAIPUKURAU

UNEMPLOYMENT SITUATION DEPOT CLOSES DOWN. From Our Own Correspondent WAIPUKURAU, September 16. The unemployment relief situation in Waipukurau has improved considerably of late, with the result that comparatively few applications for relief of distress have been received. In view of this greatly improved state of affairs, it has been decided to close down the relief depot till further notice. The results of play at the weekly session of the Waipukurau Chess Club to date are as follow:— Handicap tourney: A. M. Sherriff beat Johanson, G. A. Wiggins beat S. E. McGregor, E. J. Moffatt beat Johanson, A. M. Sherriff beat E. Wilson. A considerable improvement has been effected at the Waipukurau primary school, the old wood and netting fence at the bottom of the playground facing on to Porangahau road, having been dismantled and replaced in concrete. The new fence, which adds further to the general appearance of the school grounds, is indeed a welcome asset. Rugby football in Central Hawke’s Bay, as far as competition matches are concerned, has now definitely been relegated to the things of the past. There is, however, still an important game to be played, the contest between the Central Hawke’s Bay and Hastings referees, for the “Whistleblowers’ Shield.’’ This match is set down for the last Saturday in the month, and should, by the interest displayed to date, draw a great crowd, all eager no doubt to see just how the referees will fare in playing the rules which they have interpreted to the satisfaction (ur otherwise) of football enthusiasts during the season. A newcomer to the residential ranks of Waipukurau is “Young’’ Jim Griffin, the well-known professional boxer, who has takeu up a position in one of the local grocery firms. Griffin, who will be remembered by reason of his reeeut match in Waipukurau with Tommy Donovan, has expressed his willingness to assist in any way in instructing school children in the art of self-defence and is prepared to devote considerable time and care to this cause.
