WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
MEETING AT MARAEKAKAHO. The September meeting of the Maroekakaho Women's institute was held w the hall on Thursday, the president, Mrs J. Graham presiding over a wellattended meeting Atte. the opening of the meeting oy the singing ot the institute song, the president welcomed Mrs Bibby and other visitors from Waipawa. A motion of sympathy was extended io Mrs Leggett in her recent sad bereavement, members standing in sil•nce.
Designs and materials for the institute banner were discussed, and it was decided to have both ready for the next meeting.
Mrs Tankersley was unanimously elected as delegate to attend the forthcoming biennial conference at Napier.
Those present listened with interest to Mrs Bibby’a charming description of her impressions of Scotland, and afterwards Mrs Bibby was heartily thanked for her enjoyable talk. Next came a picture competition arranged by Mrs Bell and won by Miss A. McKay.
The various competitions for the day brought forth a good collection of entries. In the class for garden cushions made from sugar bags, Mrs Farmery s winning cushion was embroidered with a Maori design and made to serve the dual purpose of big and cushion. The monthly competition for the best collection of flowers was won by Mrs Farmery, Mrs Foreman being placed second. Mrs Foreman’s basket gained first place in the competition for reedloom work.
The judging of competitions was kindly carried out by visitors. Mrs Bibby and other Waipawa visitors judging the cushions and flowers, while Miss Lindsay judged the reedloom work.
During the afternoon potatoes were distributed for the annual potatogrowing competition. A dainty afternoon tea was dispensed by the hoetosses. Mesdaines Gascoyne, Ramm. Clarkson and Roach. The singing of the National Anthem brought to a close a most enjoyable afternoon. WALLINGFORD GATHERING. The monthly meeting of the Wallingford Institute held at Wallingford on Thursday, wa 3 “members’ day.” Owing to Mrs J. D. Ormond’s absence, Mrs K. P. Wilder (vice-president) presided over an attendance of 30 members and friends. After completing the business, the meeting was carried on by the members. Mrs Byrne being in the chair and Miss M. Wilson acting as secretary. A very interesting demonstration on making sugar-bag mats was given oy Mrs A. Wall. This was followed by an address given by Dr. McLean, medical superintendent of the Pukeora Sanatorium, who showed X-ray photographs to illustrate his text. Dr. McLean, who is a fluent speaker, was listened to with undivided attention and at the conclusion of his interesting address was accorded a hearty vote ot thanks. An amusing competition was won h\ Mrs E. McNutt v. ho received a prize kindlv donated by Mrs Judd. 'nr. Iho hostesses ’ for the afternoon. M | b . e, C. Ward.
