CLEAR-CUT VICTORY

TECHNICAL DEFEAT PIRATES ’ A preponderance of forward play lightened here and there with occasional examples of good work by the two back divisions, shortly sums up the match in which Technical 0.8. scored a clear-cut victory over Pirates with a score of 2’B—s. The first few minutes were very uninteresting, play consisting mostly of poor passing by the Blacks’ inside backs, grappling ruhes and attempts at finding the line. A. Smith, Pirates’ fast winger, again suffered from lack of consideration by his inside men, both from the viewpoint of good and adequate passes. Upon one of the few occasions when he was fed, he scored a good try, 20 minutes after the game began. Two minutes later the Grey forwards bustled downfield, and after a scrum close on the Black line, Jane dummied and gave Hutton a chance which brought three points to Technical. For a while the play became a trifle livelier, but for the most part the match became a forward struggle, and nt times the spectators were obviously not taking much interest. An obstruction by R. Keeble gave a penalty goal to Technical, for whom Evans scored the points. A try by It. Johnston, followed by a conversion by Brown, brought the half-time score to 11—5 in Technical’s favour. Evans, the. Greys’ first five-eighths, again scored the best try of the game, after a smart pice of short-punting by Jane, the lechnieal half, who matched pace with pace from the opposition and sent Evans over with an opportunity in a fairly tight corner near the posts. From 10 minutes after the kick-off in the second half it appeared largely a question of by how many points lechnieal would win.
