COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING COLLECTION OF RATES (From Our Own Correspondent) WAIPUKURAU, April 7. The monthly meeting of the Waipukurau County Council was held to-day, Mr A. C. Russell presiding over Crs. M. Tansey, A. W. Elliot, W. J. Edgecombe, W. Mathews, L. M. Monckton, P. F Wall and R. B. Price, clerk-engineer. Mr J. D. Todd was appointed as the county assessor to the Assessment Court, his being the only nomination received. Correspondence was received from the Waipawa Hospital Board requesting the council to pay the first quarter’s levy, which fol] duo on April 1, at last year's rates (£147 3/1), subject to adjustment later.—Granted. A circular letter was received from the Waitoino County Council asking what assistance the council would be prepared to give in the event of a test case being undertaken to decide the question of the liability of the State Advances Department for rates as mortgagee of freehold land. —It was decided to reply to the effect that the council considered the matter one for the counties’ conference. A statement was submitted by the engineer setting out the rates struck and the amount collected in each riding as under:—Hatuma, struck £Bl4 4/11, collected £778 5/5; Mt. Herbert, £5lB 4/1, £4Bl 8/3; Purimu, £632 1/6, £632 1/6. Arrears collected: Hatuma £232 18/5; Mt. Herbert, £ll2 16/5; Purimu, £235 0/5. SCHOOL CHAMPIONS. The winners of championship honours at the Waipukurau District High School sports were as follow:— Primary: Girls: Ailsa Warren; boys, Douglas Ross. Secondary: Girls, Marjorie Urquhart; boys, Ralph Smart.
