AUSTRALIAN WHEAT
World’s Markets Vanish VIEWS OF FORMER MINISTER The most distressing feature of the Australian wheat industrv is the fact that the world’s markets are vanishing, said Mr. A. S. Rodgers. a former Federal Minister, when giving evidence before the Wheat Commission at Melbourne recently. Mr. Rodgers, who represented the Chamber of Agriculture, said he considered that the measures necessary for the recovery of markets and the restoration of reasonable prices were the establishment of a quota basis with Britain, reciprocal trade agreements with non-wheatgrowing countries, and an Australian price for wheat in pre ference to subsidies and bounties. Witness added that wheatgrowing was an essential industry, employing nt least 800,000 persons in Australia. Tf the industry collapsed its magnitude nnd volume were such that industrial and financial chaos would follow. Mir. Rodgers urged the greater use of wheat for stock feeding.
