BUTTER AND BREAD “To-day the abundance and cheapness of New Zealand butter makes it available in adequate quantities even to the poorest classes. I consider, therefore that we should try to make ‘butter and bread’ rather than ’bread and butter’ (with, of course, such addition of fresh milk and fresh vegetables as can be afforded) the staple diet of growing children.” —Sir Bruce Bruce-Porter.
