OBITUARY
Mr. Walter Martin The death occurred in Christchurch yesterday of Mr. Walter Martin, aged 80, one of the early settlers of Canterbury. He arrived in New Zealand in 1860 and was employed for many years in the Department of Justice until he retired on account of ill health. For seven years he was clerk of the District Court and registrar of the High Court of Western Samoa. Since relinquishing those positions in about 1925 he had lived in Sydney and Christchurch. Brigadier Newbold The death occurred suddenly in Wellington of Brigadier John Edwin Newbold. of the Salvation Army, For 40 or 50 years he was well-known, having served in many parts of New Zealand and Australia.
