HASTINGS RACES

PERFECT CONDITIONS Manuiri Wins the Hurdles PRESIDENT’S TO GAINSFID Beautiful weather prevailed for the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s second autumn meeting at Hastings to-day. The grounds were again in splendid order, and there was a good attendance of the public present. The course was in excellent conditions and some fast racing was witnessed. Mr. AV. C. Price was at the starting lever getting the fields away with good despatches. Good judgment was shown by Mr. H. Coyle in the handicapping, and the decisions of Mr. W. P. Bussell, the judge, gave every satisfaction.

The arrangements for the meeting were in the capable hands of the secretary, Mr. H. 8. Moss, and his officials.

The Hastings Citizens’ Band plaved a programme of popular selections which were appreciated by the public. The following are the results of the racing up to the time of the "Tribune” going to Press:—

Into the straight the first time the order was Cotsfield and Kimbo, together, from Million and Manuiri, with Ex Dono close up, and Wee Boy last. This order was maintained down the back. Kahunoke was making up ground on the flat, only to lose it again at the fences. At the penultimate hurdle Kimbo went ahead and led into the straight from Million and Manuiri, At this stags Cotsfield began to drift. Kimbo led over the last fence, but in the run to the post Manuiri challenged, also Kahunoke. Manuiri won by three lengths, and Million beat Kahunoke (who made up a great deal of ground once the last hurdle was jumped) for second place by a long neck, with Kimbo tiring, a head away fourth. Into the straight there was little difference in the order, but Marsong and Winter Sport began to lose ground, while Heliotype and Seattle wgre making up lost leeway. In the run home Marae Quex outstayed the opposition to win easily by the best part of four lengths but McHeath (who was lying about fifth for most of the running) and Seattle had a hard go for second money for the former to get it by half a head, with Lady Wessex fourth, followed by Heliotype and Marsong. Talari was first into the straight, but the others were close up with the exception of Cellerimus, who had made up much of her leeway.
