EASY OPTIMISM
Australian Character After three years’ travelling in Australia Dr. Thomas Wood has written a. book, “Cobbers,” published by the Oxford University Press, largely appreciative of Australia, but with many shrewd reflections. Tha author says Australians are prone, to an easy optimism, which he attributes firstly to the climate and secondly to “Give It a Go, a. bardridden liorse, by Micawber, out of Sunshine.” “Australians have a. genius for improvisation, which is the eldest child of easy optimism,” says Dr. Wood. “One would not make the average Australian one’s first choice if one wanted an organiser, but if one. was in a tight corner he would be the best m-an in the world to get one out ot it, if resource, good humour and sheer, tinmatchable bravery could do the job.”
