DISRAELI’S IDEA
COLONIES A MILLSTONE Yorkshire Paper’s Warning effect of repercussions (By Telegraph-Press Association.) (Received 7, 12.35 p.m.) LONDON, April 6. The “Yorkshire Observer” says: “It is curious that conservative Imperialists are returning to Disraeli’s idea that the colonies are a millstone round the neck of the Mother Country. The quota threat has caused the greatest distress in New Zealand, and we have still to learn the true facts about her reported offer of a free market for British goods. “Australia is preparing for $ crisis by sending the Queensland Premier, Mr. Forgan Smith, to discuss meat. South Australia also is opposed to restriction, but Major Elliot emphasised that the Dominions must submit ta a quota like the Argentine. “If we seriously hamper dominion farming repercussions will affect British investments in the Dominions, who also will not continue to welcome British manufactures.”
