RANFURLY SHIELD

H.B. TO ISSUE CHALLENGE. EARLY SOUTHERN TOUR The decision to enter a challenge to this year’s holders of the Ranfurly Shield was made at the annual general meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union last evening. The motion was moved by Mr G. A. Maddison and seconded by Mr W, T. Foster, who expressed the view that the Hawke’s Bay senior Rugby fifteen ought to have a good chance of winning the shield if it showed equal form to that of the end of last season. The matter was raised by the Hawke’s Hay selector, Mr N. A. McKenzie, who pointed out that during the coming season the Hawke’s Bay teain would be touring as far south as Invercargill. That tour would in-the ordinary course of events be made in September, but in view of the fact that the All Blacks would be visiting Australia at the end of July, and there were prospects of Hawke’s Bay players being included, Mr McKenzie thought that the southern tour should he made earlier. He suggested that the tour take place in July, if possible. In regard to the Ranfurly Shield, he said “It appears to he the general opinion that Hawke's Bay should issue ; a challenge. If so, it, is in our interests to make the southern tour as early as possible.” It was decided that the matter he left in the hands of delegates to the New Zealand Council to arrange a suitable date for the tour
